Oliver Rowland Awarded with F1 McLaren test

Oliver Rowland will have a Formula One test with McLaren after collecting a coveted award previously won by the likes of Jenson Button and David Coulthard.

The 19-year-old won the Autosport British Racing Drivers’ Club award, which also includes £100,000 in prize money and full membership of the BRDC.

Rowland was runner-up in the Formula Renault UK race series in 2011.

The winner was announced after evaluation in Formula 2, HWA Mercedes-Benz DTM and McLaren MP4-12C GT3 cars at Silverstone, and Rowland said that it had been far from a smooth year.

“I don’t know what to say,” Oliver Rowland said. “It’s been a difficult year for me. I lost someone very close to me in [karting guru] Martin Hines, who passed away this year. He’s helped me for six or seven years. I’ve had lots to learn this year in my first year of Formula Renault. I have learned a lot and now I’m here. I just can’t believe it.”

The award is backed by McLaren, motorsport magazine Autosport and the BRDC. It was set up in 1989 to acknowledge young racing drivers from the UK.

Meanwhile Germany’s Sebastian Vettel, a double world champion after winning his second successive Formula 1 title with Red Bull this year, was named as International Racing Driver of the Year.

Force India F1 driver Di Resta was named Rookie of the Year.

Sebastian Vettel will start the British Grand Prix from pole position for Red Bull after narrowly beating team mate Mark Webber. The two of them were inseparable in all three sessions, but Vettel just edged out the Australian with a lap of 1m 29.615s compared to 1m 29.758s.

Lewis Hamilton salvaged fourth from a difficult weekend for McLaren as team-mate Jenson Button managed only 14th after struggling for rear grip.

“I think there’s something wrong – the car was pretty much undriveable,” the world champion told BBC Sport.

Vettel was quicker in the first knockout session, Webber had the edge in Q2, and then when it really mattered Vettel produced a pair of superbly committed laps to settle the contest.

Suzuka 2009 – Vettel wins Japanese Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel convincingly won the Japanese Grand Prix to keep his slim title hopes alive but championship leader Jenson Button stayed in control.

Cool Button pounced on an early tangle up ahead to finish in eighth, although a late safety car denied his Brawn team being crowned constructors’ champions.
Seventh place for Rubens Barrichello, just ahead of Brawn team mate Jenson Button, leaves the championship points table as Button 85, Barrichello 71, Vettel 69 with two races remaining.

Ahead of the duelling Brazilian and the Englishman, Kimi Raikkonen brought his Ferrari home fourth after a fighting drive, while Nico Rosberg made some amends for his Singapore error by taking fifth for Williams. Nick Heidfeld was sixth for BMW Sauber.

Hamilton lost time with a slow exit from the pits and then was hobbled by a KERS problem in the closing stages, but managed to fend off Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari for third.

Meanwhile, Button again played a perfect game of damage limitation after the points leader recovered well from his grid penalty and a poor start to finish eighth behind Barrichello.

Suzuka 2009 Qualifying – Vettel 1st, Button 7th

Sebastian Vettel grabbed pole for the Japanese Grand Prix with championship leader Jenson Button in seventh after a crash-strewn Suzuka qualifying session.

In a scrappy final session the German took his Red Bull round in 1m 32.160s to hold off Jarno Trulli who did 1m 32.220s for Toyota.

Lewis Hamilton was third for McLaren, while his friend Adrian Sutil took an outstanding fourth on the grid for Force India.

Singapore GP Practice 2: Vettel fastest

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel clocked the quickest lap of Friday practice for the Singapore Grand Prix as crashes interrupted each session at Marina Bay.

The German lapped in one minute 48.650 seconds in the second session to beat Renault’s Fernando Alonso by 0.274secs.

Rubens Barrichello topped the first session ahead of his Brawn team-mate and championship leader Jenson Button.

Renault’s Romain Grosjean and then Red Bull’s Mark Webber crashed out on the dusty, slippery street circuit.

Kovalainen was then relegated to third in the closing seconds as Fernando Alonso harried his R29 around the bumpy street circuit to a time just 0.274s slower than Vettel, giving Renault a much needed boost after its most troubled of weeks.

BMW’s big car upgrade introduced for this weekend’s race continued to show promising potential as Nick Heidfeld claimed fourth, with Button dropping to fifth following Brawn’s morning 1-2.
