Ferrari issue F1 quit ultimatum

Ferrari have threatened to quit Formula 1 at the end of the season if the sport continues with plans to introduce an optional £40m budget cap from 2010.

“If the regulations for 2010 will not change, then Ferrari does not intend to enter cars in the next Formula 1 world championship,” read the statement.

Ferrari fear the evolution of a two-tier championship, between those teams who adopt the cap and those who do not.

The teams will discuss the plans with FIA chief Max Mosley in the next week.

But motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, has so far refused to be drawn into a public discussion about Ferrari’s threat.

“We have nothing to add to the letter sent to Ferrari on 29 April,” said an FIA spokesman, referring to a letter sent to Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo in which FIA chairman Max Mosley rejected the team’s complaints about the budget cap.

Ferrari insist their announcement is not simply posturing or a political move.

“For the first time ever in F1, the 2010 season will see the introduction of two different sets of regulations based on arbitrary technical rules and economic parameters,” their statement added.

Renault R29

Renault R29 The new Renault R29 F1 car for 2009 could not overshadow Fernando Alonso and “the Ferrari question”.

The two-times world champion Alonso, has said he wants to concentrate on the start of the season and winning races, rather than thinking about the future and 2011 when he is supposedly going to join Ferrari.

Tall and narrow wing, not a surprise at all. There is no kinetic energy recovery system and that is pretty much all that can be said about the new Renault R29.

F60 Ferrari Debut

Ferrari F60Exciting news for all Ferrari fans. Massa took the new Ferrari F60 for a spin for the first time.

He said he is excited about the new F1 car and a bit surprised as well, having expected it to be bigger with huge front wings.

The car is still some way off the final version we will see in Melbourne, when the 2009 F1 season will kick off with the Australian Grand Prix.

Standard engine proposal and will it improve Formula 1

The Standard engine rule, which the FIA wants to introduce, is causing a bit of a stir. First Ferrari said they may consider their future involvement in the sport and now Fernando Alonso says he may consider retiring from Formula 1, if the new standard-engine-for-all rule is introduced in 2010.

There have been enough changes in the last few years and everyone seems happy enough to go along, if the changes improve overtaking, excitement and security, but no one wants to see all cars fitted with the same engine. They may as well put a robot driver inside and just let the logos of the sponsors go around the circuits.

The reason given for this proposal is the financial strain on the smaller teams. But will it improve Formula 1?

Most fans would rather see 5 fantastic teams fighting for the title, each with unique cars and engines, rather than 15 mediocre teams with same engine cars, who are just attending and not really competing!
