Ferrari's Fernando Alonso wins at Monza

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso leapt back into title contention after winning a thrilling battle with McLaren’s Jenson Button in the Italian Grand Prix.

“Most of the thanks for the win is to the mechanics,” said Alonso.

“The pit stop felt so quick. I stopped, they changed tyres and there was a green light. I didn’t even have first gear in.

“When I came out of the pits I saw he was quite far behind and I thought OK, we have done it but I forgot he was coming at 320kmh (199mph) and he closed very fast.

“We went in the first corner nearly side by side and then I nearly spun when I got on the throttle.”

The Spaniard moves up to third in the championship, 21 points behind new leader Mark Webber of Red Bull, who leapfrogged McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.

It was a disastrous day for Lewis Hamilton in the other McLaren, who jumped to fourth as Mark Webber’s Red Bull again started slowly, but at the second chicane Massa’s left rear wheel came into contact with Hamilton’s front right, and by the first Lesmo the McLaren driver was in the gravel, his day done.

For nearly 80% of the time, the Formula 1 drivers are at full throttle and although most achieve good lap times relatively easy, in order to be competitive, they really have to show skill and have great engines of course.

With only three corners worth mentioning, one of which being the famous Parabolica, most drivers find overtaking to be quite difficult at Monza.

The high speed and heavy braking, quite often result in bad accidents and unfortunately Monza has been the scene of a few tragedies.

We had a great weekend in Milan. The general admission tickets meant we could move around the track getting different views of the action. the special trains on Sunday from Milan central made it very easy and quick to get to the track. A great event which was much enjoyed.

Fantastic weekend, we actually spent four days at the track. If you have a 3 day ticket the circuit is basically open on thursday as well. This lets walk into all the granstands etc and also see and talk to (Shout at) the drivers doing thier circuit recons.

Fabulous venue, either stay in Milan or near the Railway Line. Transport buses laid on from railway station. Milan also is fantastic for a night out.

We were in GA grandstands along the straight by the “double martini” signs after the Lesmos. There is no big screen TV there so you can’t keep track of scoring. Be advised – Kangaroo TV rental does not work on this part of the track.
